Recovery Program - Phase I
The first 30 days at Gentle Spirit are spent getting the client stabilized physically, mentally, and emotionally. Clients will get a full assessment as well as a medical screening. Medications will be prescribed for clients when it is medically advised. Clients will also begin to build the foundation they will need to complete treatment. This will be done by designing a treatment plan with input from the client. Because they are part of the planning process they will begin to feel as though they are “part of their own recovery plan.” They will also begin to find a spiritual path that will suit there beliefs and desires.
Treatment Goals for Phase I:
- Full Assessment and history
- Diagnosis
- Stabilization
- Treatment Plan
- Identifying underlying reasons for substance abuse
- Clients able to see their own strengths and identify their weaknesses
- Changing their daily patterns to focus on recovery
- Begin intense psychotherapy with our own therapist
- Learning to eat correctly and begin exercising
- Introduction of Native American spiritual principles or a spiritual program of the clients’ choosing
- Begin 12-step meetings to form healthy relationships with local people in the recovery community
- Obtain a sponsor from the above meeting resources
- Begin to take responsibility for their own destiny
- Identify family dynamics that have caused problems
- Begin a healthy relationship with selected family members when appropriate
- Make a beginning on working the 12-steps of recovery with staff and their sponsor
Phase 1 is a very intense program. We need this time to break down the clients’ denial system and to re-educate them with healthy mechanisms to learn how to make good life choices. Clients will be able to participate in activities to learn how to have fun without the use of drugs and alcohol. Clients will be continually monitored for emotional instability during this time because for many clients, it is the hardest part of getting clean. Clients will spend very little time communicating with family members because the nature of the intense relationship dynamic causes many addicts to try and leave treatment and fix things at home. It is best that the family be positive towards the client especially in this phase of treatment. This phase should last about 30 days, but in some cases clients may need more time to get acclimated to a life without chemicals or to a living situation where they must learn to work with other clients and staff in a non antagonistic manor.
